“Before, Now and Then: A Tale of Women’s Challenges and Triumphs”

The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy had the privilege of joining the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Harare, ICAPA Trust and members of the diplomatic corps to experience the screening of the film; Before, Now and Then. Directed by the talented and award-winning Indonesian filmmaker Kamila Andini, the film provided a poignant exploration of the complex realities faced by women.

The film was set in traditional Indonesian society, portraying the outburst of challenges faced by women. It emphasized how women often take precedence in making painful decisions that shape their families and society. The protagonist’s choice to leave her husband, who had given her four children, to return to her ex-husband did not symbolize truth but instead highlighted the complexity of personal struggles and societal expectations.

The Films dramatic ending brought this complexity to the forefront as the eldest daughter asked her mother to cherish the soil of her former married life, symbolizing the roots and sacrifices that defined her family. The poignant question, “Mom, why did you leave?” left the audience reflecting on themes of wisdom, sacrifice, and the emotional toll of such decisions.

The film’s authentic portrayal of Indonesian culture was enriched with vibrant music that celebrated tradition while offering a profound commentary on the resilience and strength of women navigating the complexities of life and relationships.
