Constitutionalism and Sovereign Statecraft: 250 Years of U.S. Practice and Lessons for Modern Diplomacy

The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID), in collaboration with the Embassy of the United States of America in Zimbabwe, hosted a special virtual public lecture titled “Constitutionalism and Sovereign Statecraft: 250 Years of U.S. Practice and Lessons for Modern Diplomacy.”

The lecture brought together students, alumni, diplomats and international relations practitioners to explore how constitutional governance shapes foreign policy, diplomacy and statecraft.

Academic V. A. Chikanda highlighted the significance of the United States’ forthcoming 250th anniversary, describing it as a valuable opportunity to reflect on the evolution of constitutionalism, sovereignty, democratic governance and their enduring influence on statecraft and international relations. He also expressed appreciation to the Embassy of the United States of America in Zimbabwe for partnering with the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy to facilitate the lecture.

Dr. Jeremy Berkowitz provided insights into how the U.S. constitutional system has influenced diplomacy and foreign policy over the past two and a half centuries. He emphasized that constitutionalism extends beyond domestic governance and plays a critical role in shaping international engagement, diplomatic credibility and decision-making.

The lecture highlighted key lessons for modern diplomacy, including the importance of constitutional legitimacy, strong institutions, democratic accountability and broad domestic support in sustaining foreign policy commitments. It also explored the growing role of non-state actors, digital technology, artificial intelligence and strategic communication in contemporary diplomatic practice.

The discussion reinforced the link between effective governance at home and credibility abroad, while providing valuable perspectives on contemporary issues such as security diplomacy, economic statecraft, climate cooperation and digital diplomacy.

ZID extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Jeremy Berkowitz, the Embassy of the United States of America in Zimbabwe  and all those who contributed to the success of the lecture. The engagement reaffirmed the importance of academic dialogue and institutional partnerships in advancing diplomacy education and international understanding.
