The Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy students joined Ms. Pamela M. Tremont, Ambassador of the United States to Zimbabwe, for a screening of the Broadway musical Hamilton on Thursday, 24 September 2026, at her residence in Harare.
The production gave students a window into the formative years of the United States, exploring leadership, public service, nation-building and the exercise of state power. Alexander Hamilton’s story highlighted the value of constitutionalism and strong institutions. As a key advocate for the U.S. Constitution and its ratification, and as an author of The Federalist Papers, he argued for a national government capable of advancing the national interest. As the first Secretary of the Treasury, he showed how sound financial institutions underpin a strong state and his work on foreign relations, trade and neutrality demonstrated the close link between domestic strength and foreign policy.
For students of diplomacy, these themes connect directly to their studies: constitutional structures, political institutions and economic systems all shape a country’s ability to make decisions, manage foreign relations and pursue its interests abroad.
The evening also allowed students to interact with U.S. Embassy representatives and experience cultural diplomacy first-hand, illustrating how cultural exchange and people-to-people relations foster international understanding. It showed how the arts can tell national stories and encourage dialogue between societies.
ZID extends its sincere appreciation to Ambassador Tremont and the U.S. Embassy in Harare for hosting its students and offering them an enriching experience of diplomacy, history and culture beyond the classroom.
